Small in numbers, but a great show. Sport as it
should be, well organised, unpressurized, good competition and good
sportsmanship.
It was always going to be about supporting the
Canterbury community. With the Dame Ngaio Marsh Theatre, unavailable for
the rest of the year, the search was on for another venue. After
much hunting around, Mairehau High School was available. The venue
worked out very well, along with great "sound and lighting" from Richard
from Cperb Sound.
Athletes came from Dunedin, Christchurch, Westport,
Nelson, Blenheim and Palmerston North.
Judges came from Auckland, Wanganui and Palmerston
North. It was excellent to have Christchurch's very own Billie
Kaine back judging again. A former World and Universe Champion, Billie
brings great expertise to the judging panel.
With plenty space out the back, the athletes were
full on with their preparation. Everyone had a good workout on
stage, as caller Jim Pitt put them through their paces. The
Overalls were fiercely contested at nighttime, in front of a very vocal
and appreciative crowd, revved up by compeer Jill Clark.
Congratulations to the Overall winners.

All in all, a great weekend and a great team effort
to those who supported the weekend. Most of the athletes were
using this weekend as a preparation for the South Island Championships,
to be held in Dunedin on September 3rd 2011. Preparation is well
under way for this show, with "Supplement Me" already confirmed as the
Major Sponsor. Checkout the new Otago Regional page for more show
information.
